Vestas says it plans to launch a new version of its V112-3.0 MW wind turbine specifically designed for high-wind sites. According to the company, the new version of the V112-3.0 MW features a modified gearbox designed to handle the increased loads from high wind speeds.
"In traditional and mature wind markets like the European mainland, there are not that many high-wind sites and opportunities left," explains Knud Winther Nielsen, senior product manager at Vestas Turbines R&D and head of commercial development of the V112-3.0 MW turbine. "However, in other markets, there are huge untapped high-wind resources and potential for high-wind-specific turbines."
Nielsen says Vestas sees a lot of potential in the high-wind segment in large geographic markets such as the U.S., Canada and Australia, as well as in emerging markets.
