GE says it has signed an agreement
with NextEra Energy Canada ULC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, to supply the wind turbines for six wind farms in Ontario.
GE will provide 288 of its 1.6-100 wind turbines for the projects, which will total a cumulative 460 MW of wind power capacity - enough to power nearly 120,000 Ontario households, according to GE.
GE's new 1.6-100 wind turbine model features 100-meter blades and is specifically designed for low-wind environments. The turbines will be manufactured in Ottawa, Windsor and Stony Creek in order to meet Ontario’s domestic-content requirements.
According to GE, the six wind projects represent more than $1 billion in investment by NextEra Energy Canada. Subsidiaries of NextEra Energy Canada were awarded 20-year power purchase agreements by the Ontario Power Authority to develop the projects, which will be located at six sites across Ontario and are expected to enter commercial operation in 2013 and 2014.
