Clipper Windpower Plc, headquartered in Carpenteria, Calif., has released sales data for its new Liberty wind turbine. According to the company, sales efforts that were begun in June 2006 for the Liberty turbine - and publicly announced over the course of the past 12 months - account for more than 5,600 MW (2,240 units) of firm and contingent orders for deliveries beginning in 2007 through 2011.

"We're delighted with the response and interest we're continuing to receive from both existing industry customers and new customers, including additional Fortune 500 companies that are increasingly entering the wind energy industry," states Robert H. Gates, senior vice president of commercial operations for Clipper.

He adds that the potential 5,600 MW of wind energy from these units ordered could supply the annual electricity needs of more than 1.6 million average American homes and prevent over 10 million tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere each year.

With a 2.5 MW capacity, the Liberty machine is the largest wind turbine built in the United States, the company notes.
