Cary, N.C.-based LORD Corp., a manufacturer of devices and systems that manage mechanical motion and controls noise, has completed the testing of a damper design for Wasatch Wind's wind tower systems division.

"LORD has leveraged more than 80 years of experience in vibration isolation and industrial damping applications to design and manufacture the damping system for the unique struts in Wasatch Wind's Space Frame tower," says Bryan Haltom, LORD's market development manager. "It is exciting to see the analytical and physical test results match so well."

Based on technology used in helicopter rotor damping applications, the design for this application has the requirement of a 20-year lifespan with large temperature swings, massive loads and small deflections, the company says. LORD modeled a wide range of possible flow paths for the fluid damper as it wears in operation.

According to the company, accelerated durability testing is currently underway on sub-components to confirm predicted life and functionality of the damper.
