AMSC's D-VAR System Will Connect Texas Wind Farm To The Grid

Westborough, Mass.-based American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC), a provider of power electronic systems, has received an order for its D-VAR voltage regulation systems for a Texas wind farm.
According to an AMSC representative, the name or location of the wind farm cannot be disclosed. However, a local transmission grid owner determined that a dynamic reactive support is required to maintain voltage stability for when the wind farm is connected to the grid.
"Our D-VAR solutions have become a primary, cost-effective means to enable developers to connect their wind farms to the power grid and sell their wind-generated electricity to customers," says Chuck Stankiewicz, senior vice president of AMSC Power Systems.
With this order and another recent request for a Northern Ireland wind project, the company now has an installed base and orders for D-VAR and PowerModule solutions to serve more than 2,900 MW of wind power worldwide - nearly triple the amount served by AMSC a year ago, the company adds.
