Calgary, Alberta-based AltaLink, an independent transmission provider, has received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to build a double-circuit, 240 kV transmission line between Pincher Creek and Lethbridge. The new 90 km transmission line will allow for the continued development of southwest Alberta's wind-generated electricity industry.

The Southwest 240 kV project is the first major transmission line approved in southern Alberta in more than 20 years.

"We're ready to move forward with getting this critical new transmission line into service," says Scott Thon, president and CEO of AltaLink. "Albertans are looking for cleaner electricity, and this transmission line will help deliver wind-generated power to homes and businesses across Alberta."

With the ability to transport approximately 1,000 MW of electricity, the new transmission line will enable Alberta to move forward as a leader in wind generation in Canada, according to the company.
