Google recently revealed in its official blog that the online search giant will join forces with GE to "drive the changes necessary to empower consumers with better energy choices." The companies plan to focus their efforts on smart grid technologies through improvements to power generation, transmission and distribution.

As a start to their combined effort, GE and Google will launch a policy partnership in Washington, D.C., and advocate for policies that will advance development of the U.S. electricity system.

The companies say that their initial priorities include planning, siting and cost allocation for the transmission capacity necessary to enable large-scale deployment of renewable electricity generation in the U.S., and development and deployment of a smart electricity grid that will empower utilities and end users to manage electricity more efficiently and with lower emissions.

Additional plans for the cooperative agreement include collaboration to develop and deploy renewable energy and plug-in vehicle-related technologies, with special focus on utility-scale renewable energy and software and services for plug-in vehicles.
