Texas Public Utility Commission Authorizes New Transmission Lines

The Texas Public Utility Commission has authorized nearly $5 billion of new transmission lines that will carry wind-generated electricity from West Texas and the Panhandle to urban areas of the state.

Today, Texas generates nearly 7,000 MW of wind - the most of any state - and the new transmission lines will help increase that number by 18,000 MW or more.

PUC Commissioner Julie Caruthers Parsley was the only dissenter of the plan, arguing that the new lines may add more power than the electric grid could handle, sources say. The commissioner also expressed concerns that the transmission project might delay other projects, such as the construction of nuclear reactors.
