Second Wind Inc., a Somerville, Mass.-based developer of electronics and software for the wind energy industry, has improved its Nomad 2 technology, which is a tool for acquiring data from towers.

The company has added a GPS option that automatically determines Nomad 2's location - its latitude, longitude and elevation - and incorporates it in all-collected data. This GPS option also automatically sets and synchronizes Nomad 2's real-time clock to one-second accuracy, the company says.

Also, Second Wind has signed an agreement with Globalstar Communications to provide satellite service for the company's instrumentation in the U.S. and Canada. Using protocols that Second Wind developed for the low-cost service, communications will work anywhere below the 60th parallel. Simply turning on a Globalstar-equipped Nomad 2 will automatically establish encrypted communications with Globalstar's network, gateways and secure Second Wind servers. The loggers will upload data every 10 minutes, making any resource assessment sites suitable for high-value forecasting applications.

Second Wind will offer the new options for Nomad 2s shipped by early December 2006, the company adds.
