A 2 MW floating offshore wind turbine is now generating power near Nagasaki, Japan. According to a Bloomberg report, a group led by Toda Corp. installed the turbine for a Ministry of the Environment pilot project, having built a 100 kW turbine in 2012.

The consortium heading the Nagasaki project also includes Hitachi Ltd., the National Maritime Research Institute, Fuyo Ocean Development & Engineering Co., and Kyoto University.

Following the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the Japanese government revealed plans to test the viability of large-scale floating wind farms, and a group led by Marubeni Corp. is also developing a 2 MW demonstration project offshore Fukushima. The group recently announced that its floating wind turbine is slated to begin operation in November.
