Over the weekend, Africa's largest wind farm began producing power after stakeholders flipped the switch on the 120 MW Ashegoda Wind Farm, located in Ethiopia.

According to a Reuters report, France-based Vergnet SA, with backing from the French Development Agency, BNP Paribas and the Ethiopian government, built the $289.68 million wind farm. Work on Ashegoda began in 2009 and was slated for completion in 2011; however, Reuters says "logistical constraints" held up the project.

The news agency adds that the wind farm is part of an initiative to help diversify Ethiopia’s energy resources and address dry seasons in the region, as nearly all of the country’s electricity comes from hydropower.
