New Energy Economy, a nonprofit organization, has launched a new ad campaign pressing New Mexico's largest utility, PNM, to pursue more clean energy. The group says billboards are now posted in Albuquerque depicting that the utility is "out of step with the kind of energy generation New Mexicans prefer today."

By a 7-1 margin, New Mexico voters want to encourage solar rather than coal for electricity, and by a 5-1 margin prefer wind over coal, according to the organization, citing a recent poll by Colorado College. However, the group claims PNM today produces a large amount of its electricity from coal and 4% from wind and 1% from solar.

"PNM must dramatically change course away from price volatility, coal and excessive pollution, and move toward clean energy and responsible, stable pricing, ‚ÄĚsays New Energy Economy Executive Director Mariel Nanasi.
