Korean manufacturer Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has developed 5.85 MW permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for offshore wind turbines.

Based on the generator's improved durability and minimized use of expendables, HHI says the machine's product life is extended from 20 to 25 years. HHI plans to commercialize the generator by 2014 after finalizing field tests.

The manufacturer says the development of the PMSG will be a catalyst for it to enter into the 5 MW and 6 MW offshore wind turbine markets.
