A MidAmerican Energy Holdings subsidiary has agreed to purchase 300 MW of installed capacity from Terra-Gen Power's massive Alta Wind Energy Center, located in the Tehachapi region in Kern County, Calif. Terms of the deal were not released.

MidAmerican says it intends to buy the 168 MW Alta Wind VII and the 132 MW Alta Wind IX projects from California Highwind Power, a subsidiary of Terra-Gen Power.

The Alta Wind VII and Alta Wind IX projects are part of the Alta Wind Energy Center. The completion of the two projects will bring the total capacity of the Alta Wind Energy Center more than 1.3 GW. Approximately 1 GW of installed capacity is producing power.

According to Terra-Gen Power, Southern California Edison will purchase the output from both projects under power purchase agreements that extend to 2035. The projects will interconnect to Southern California Edison’s Tehachapi Renewable Transmission Project, a transmission line designed specifically to access multiple renewable energy generation sources.

The transmission lines are capable of delivering 4.5 GW of electricity from the wind-rich Tehachapi region to Southern California.
