Minnesota-based wind developer National Wind and Billings, Mont.-based Montana Wind Resources say they are partnering to create Judith Highlands Energy, a community wind project with the potential to reach 500 MW. When completed, it is expected to be Montana's first utility-scale, community-owned wind project.

The proposed development will be built near the 135 MW Judith Gap wind project. Currently, the project includes nearly 50,000 acres - almost all of which will be needed to develop the wind farm's first phase.

The wind farm will be jointly managed by both companies. According to National Wind, the business model gives landowners the chance to become stakeholders.

Judith Highlands Energy's development team executed two leases for on-site meteorological equipment installation. The met towers are scheduled to be installed by the end of the year. According to a press release, one year of on-site wind analysis is needed to determine the best spots for turbine placement.

The wind farm is expected to be developed in multiple 100 MW phases over the next five to eight years. The project will include more than 300 turbines.
