Canadian Hydro Developers Inc. has announced the official opening of the Melancthon EcoPower Centre, a 199.5 MW wind power project located near Shelburne, Ontario.

Construction of the Melancthon EcoPower Centre began with the 67.5 MW phase I in the spring of 2005 and achieved commercial operation in March 2006. Construction of the 132 MW Phase II of the project began in the autumn of 2007 and is expected to achieve commercial operation in November.

All of the electricity and renewable energy certificates are sold to the Ontario Power Authority under two, 20-year renewable energy supply contracts. Annual average long-term generation from the EcoPower Centre is expected to be 545 GWh.

"We are proud that Canadian Hydro Developers picked Ontario as the location for Canada's largest wind farm," says George Smitherman, deputy premier and minister of energy and infrastructure. "This important investment not only has valuable spin-off benefits for the local community, but benefits all Ontarians by boosting our supply of nonpolluting power."
