Rahall Introduces Siting Standards Bill

Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.V., recently introduced a bill (H.R.2337) that would establish standards for siting, construction, monitoring and managing wind projects designed to mitigate impacts on wildlife.

H.R.2337 would require that pre- and post-construction surveys be implemented to "reasonably evaluate the extent to which a particular site is used by migratory birds, bats and other wildlife, including species listed as endangered," the bill text reads. In addition, it requests that wind farms not be constructed on ecologically sensitive areas that are important to wildlife. As section 233 of the bill states, if a developer violates these requirements, it may be subject to a fine up to $50,000 or imprisonment.

According to Wind Energy Works, a House Committee on Natural Resources mark-up session - where the bill will be formally considered - is scheduled for June 6.
