Cape Wind On Hold Until Minerals Management Service Releases Its Draft EIS

| The proposed Cape Wind offshore wind farm is on hold until Washington, D.C.-headquartered Minerals Management Service (MMS), which is responsible for managing the country's offshore energy and mineral resources - including alternative energy sources - issues the first draft of its environmental impact statement (EIS). The Minerals Management Service has delayed Cape Wind's environmental review until this summer. According to Jim Gordon, Cape Wind's president, the company was planning on receiving the report in April. "Any delays impact a project - we are certainly disappointed the draft EIS was not released in April," Gordon says, adding that he understands the report is delayed to properly evaluate the environmental effects of the project. However, Gordon continues, "Every month the project is delayed, the region loses very important economic and environmental benefits." John Romero, a representative from MMS, concedes that the organization is in fact taking its time because the Cape Wind project would be the first offshore wind farm in the country. Romero adds that MMS is in fact planning on releasing the draft EIS in the summer, with a public hearing following the draft in the fall. A final EIS is expected to be complete in the summer of 2008, Romero says. |
