UPC Wind Files Application With EFSC For Oregon Wind Farm

UPC Wind, a Newtown, Mass.-based wind farm developer and owner, has filed its site certification application with the Oregon Energy and Facility Siting Council (EFSC), which serves the Oregon Department of Energy, to build its proposed 60 MW wind farm in Wasco County.

According to the company, large energy providers in Oregon must undergo the EFSC site certification process to gain approval for construction and implementation of their facilities. The council reviews site certification proposals and determines compliance with their energy facility siting standards and with the requirements of other state and local permitting agencies.

"Filing our application today is a solid step forward in our plans to develop the Cascade Wind Project, which will greatly expand Oregon's wind energy capacity," comments Paul Gaynor, UPC Wind's president and chief executive officer.

UPC Wind's Cascade Wind Project is slated to use 40 1.5 MW GE turbines for the site. If approved, the project will connect to Bonneville Power Administration's electricity grid. The EFSC site certification is expected to be granted early next year and, according to UPC Wind, there could be commercial wind farm operation by the end of 2008.
