Manitoba Calls For New Wind Projects

Manitoba Hydro has released a request for proposals (RFP) for new wind projects totaling up to 300 MW of wind - representing enough energy to power 100,000 homes. The deadline for submission of proposals is July 17.

"This RFP shows our commitment to developing wind power not only as a made-in-Manitoba clean, renewable energy source, but also for its economic opportunities for our rural communities, First Nations, construction firms and advanced manufacturing suppliers, and its exciting employment opportunities for our young people," says Science, Technology, Energy and Mines Minister Jim Rondeau.

The RFP will help fulfill Manitoba's 1,000 MW wind strategy, which is expected to generate C$2 billion in investment, C$100 million in wind-rights payments to landowners and C$150 million in property taxes to local municipalities. In addition to the request for 300 MW released today, three more allocations of 200 MW each are targeted for 2013 to 2014, 2015 to 2016 and 2017 to 2018, based on economic viability, say representatives of the Manitoba government.
