Colorado State University (CSU) has announced plans to convert its entire Fort Collins campus energy use to 100% wind power with the development of a wind farm that will be located on the university's 11,000-acre Maxwell Ranch - the CSU Green Power Project.

According to CSU, the wind farm will generate a minimum of 65 MW. Because the university uses about 16 MW of power at peak demand, the project will create more power than it consumes.

The Colorado State University Research Foundation, a private, nonprofit advocacy arm of the university, recently finalized a deal with Wind Holding LLC to develop the facility. Wind Holding has two years to begin construction and up to eight years to complete the project, CSU adds. Once commissioned, the wind farm will serve as an outdoor laboratory for researchers across campus.

"The Colorado State University Green Power Project is just another step in the university's overall goal to develop reliable and ecologically sound energy alternatives to fossil fuels and to continue groundbreaking research in this area," says Larry Edward Penley, CSU's president.
