The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), a Calgary, Alberta-based independent system operator for the province's interconnected power system, has released a new 10-year transmission system plan outlines about $3.5 billion in potential transmission upgrades to ensure future grid reliability.

According to AESO, the company will need to keep up with the expected growth in Alberta in terms of power and potential development of new generation projects within the next 10 years. While the power grid is capable of handling residents' current demand for electricity, timely development of the transmission is required to provide greater efficiency for the future.

"The economy in Alberta has been growing at a tremendous clip, and that translates into a greater need for electricity," says Neil Miller, AESO's vice president, transmission.

If the concepts examined in the plan are built, the investment would result in less than a $5 charge to the wires portion of a customer's residential bill, which would show up after the facilities are up and running, AESO adds.
