Northern Power Introduces Wind Power Converter | in News Departments > Products & Technologies | by NAW Staff on Monday 05 March 2007   |
Waitsfield, Vt.-headquartered Northern Power, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp., has introduced the FlexPhase, a new wind turbine power converter that was selected by the American Wind Energy Association for its 2006 Technical Achievement Award.
According to the company, the FlexPhase improves wind turbine reliability, energy capture and grid performance. The power circuit enables the modular power converter to use 40% fewer power transistors and 50% fewer capacitors than conventional power converters. In addition, it can be configured for most types of wind turbine applications in the 500 kW to 5 MW range.
"Our new power converters for the wind market are grid-friendly," says Jim Stover, Northern Power's power electronics business manager. "By properly allocating real and reactive power, our power converters better capture energy at partial power and lower wind speeds, helping wind power to become an even more practical solution for the alternative energy marketplace."
