The Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) has approved a wind energy project being developed by Synergics Wind Energy in Garrett County, Md., Synergics plans to build a 20-turbine, 50 MW facility on Backbone Mountain.

The PSC's ruling requires the company to keep the power grid safe and reliable, meet international standards for building turbines and file a new road plan with the Garrett County Office of Inspections and Permits to avoid crossing the property of an intervener to the case.

"This is a very exciting day for renewable energy in Maryland," says Frank Maisano, a spokesman for wind developers in Maryland, who has worked closely on the project with Synergics.

"After a long wait, Maryland will have wind projects online in 2010, providing clean energy to a community, state and environment that are demanding it."

Construction is expected to begin in the spring.
