North American Windpower: New Brunswick Power Agrees To Purchase Wind Energy

Calgary, Alberta-headquartered TransAlta Corp., a generator of electricity from a variety of sources, including renewable energy, has entered into a 25-year power purchase agreement with New Brunswick Power, a New Brunswick-based power supplier. The agreements represent the province's second power purchase agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, TransAlta will provide 75 MW of wind power to New Brunswick Power. TransAlta will construct, own and operate a wind power facility in the Kent Hills area of New Brunswick. Natural Forces Technologies Inc., a local Atlantic wind developer, is TransAlta's co-development partner in the project.

The 25-turbine wind farm is subject to regulatory and environmental approvals, and is expected to begin commercial operation by the end of 2008, the companies say. Once complete, it will provide a capacity of 220,000 MWh per year, which is enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 13,600 homes. The facility will use 3 MW wind turbines purchased from Vestas-Canada Wind Technology Inc.
