BlueWater Wind, a Newark, Del.-based developer of wind energy, is competing for a long-term energy contract with Wilmington, Del.-headquartered Delmarva Power to develop wind energy in the state.

The company is proposing to build an offshore wind farm off the coast of Delaware, which could be the first offshore wind farm in the U.S., the company says. According to a BlueWater representative, the company is presenting to build three wind farms - but will only develop one of them. Two of the sites would have a capacity of 600 MW and would be in the Atlantic Ocean. One of the projects would be less than 600 MW of capacity and would be located in the Delaware Bay. BlueWater is proposing to use 3 MW turbines for all three sites.

If BlueWater wins the contract, the company will still need to acquire permits. Therefore, it estimates it would begin the first phase of the project in the spring of 2010 and the second phase in 2011.
