White Plains, N.Y.-headquartered New York Power Authority (NYPA), a state-owned electric utility, recently agreed to purchase 72 MW of renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Houston-based Horizon Wind Energy and Portland, Ore.-based PPM Energy - both wind farm developers.

The RECs will be obtained from two wind farms located in New York - the Maple Ridge Wind Farm in Lewis County, which has a 60.5 MW capacity, and the Madison Wind Farm in Madison County, which has a 11.5 MW capacity.

"These agreements are part of our continuing effort to encourage renewable power in New York state for improved air quality, reduced dependence on foreign oil and spurring the growth of clean energy technologies," says Timothy S. Carey, NYPA's president and chief executive officer.

NYPA provides electricity to government agencies, community-owned electric systems, rural electric cooperatives and job-producing companies. Therefore, the Port Authority of New York, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York City Housing Authority and the new Freedom Tower, among other customers, will benefit from the REC purchase.
