North American Windpower: UMQ Passes Resolution For Additional Wind Power

The Union of Municipalities of Quebec's (UMQ) executive committee and board of directors recently passed a resolution calling for standard offer contracts for wind energy in Quebec similar to those in Ontario.

Quebec had previously announced plans for the development of 4,000 MW of wind capacity. As part of the plan, the government set aside 250 MW for municipalities and another 250 MW for First Nations. Under this new resolution that was passed at UMQ's Dec. 1 meeting, the municipality is requesting an additional block of 250 MW of wind energy capacity.

According to Jean Langevin of UMQ, as long as there are no significant changes in the government, this standard offer contract should be issued during the summer 2007. At that time, the UMQ will know whether the electricity generated from these projects will have a fixed or variable price.
