North American Windpower: Aspen Skiing Co. Sells SkiGreen Tags To Its Guests

Aspen Skiing Co. (ASC), the Aspen, Colo.-based operator of four ski resorts (including Snowmass and Aspen Mountain), has formed a partnership with Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), a Portland, Ore.-headquartered nonprofit organization that markets green power products, to sell 100% Green-e certified SkiGreen Tags to resort guests who wish to offset their travel-related emissions to and from the resort with wind energy.

According to the company, SkiGreen Tags can be added to a season pass for $20, or guests can purchase a single day tag with each lift ticket for $2. Each $20 tag represents 1 MWh of renewable power generation and offsets approximately 1,400 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. Each $2 tag represents 100 kWh of renewable generation, which is equivalent to approximately 150 miles driven.

"Aspen/Snowmass is in the unique position to help educate and influence the winter sports community at large," says Patrick Nye, BEF's director of sales. "Through programs such as SkiGreen and SaveSnow, Aspen will create a larger positive impact beyond greening their own operations."

Participants in the program will receive acknowledgement of what their contribution represents, along with SkiGreen stickers and a coupon for Aspen/Snowmass services. In addition, BEF has committed to reinvest 20% of all consumer sales from green tags sold in Aspen into the community for new local renewable energy projects.
