Environment New Jersey, a citizen-based environmental advocacy organization, praised Gov. Jon Corzine, D-N.J., and New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJ BPU) President Jeanne Fox for establishing a visionary program to promote offshore wind energy in the nation.

Corzine announced that he wants to triple the amount of wind power that is used in the state by 2020 to 3,000 MW by constructing three offshore wind farms.

"Governor Corzine's plan to power 800,000 homes with clean wind energy by 2020 is a gale force for change, moving us away from dirty power and towards a new energy future," says Dena Mottola Jaborska, executive director of Environment New Jersey. "It is the most visionary plan to promote offshore wind energy in the nation."

There are currently no offshore wind farms in operation in the U.S., but Delaware and Rhode Island have both set plans to build one off their coasts in the next few years. NJ BPU recently chose Garden State Offshore Energy, a joint venture of PSEG Renewable Generation and Deepwater Wind, as the preferred developer of a 350 MW wind farm off the coast of New Jersey.

In 2005, New Jersey passed a law requiring that 20% of the state's electricity come from renewable sources by 2020. Corzine's plan will ensure offshore wind energy fulfills roughly half of this requirement, according to Environment New Jersey.
