Two 5 MW offshore wind turbines, offering the highest nameplate capacity to date, have been erected by REpower Systems AG, a Germany-based wind turbine producer, at the DEWI-OCC (Offshore and Certification Centre) in Cuxhaven, Germany.

The first completed turbine was built for the utility EWE AG, and the second one for the joint venture EWC Windpark Cuxhaven GmbH, the company says. Both turbines have a hub height of 117 meters and a rotor diameter of 126 meters. The rotor blades, each 61.5 meters long, will cover an area of 12,469 square meters when spinning.

According to Jens Gosswein, project manager for the offshore division at REpower, both turbines are expected to be connected to the grid and start operating in December.

REpower set up a 5 MW turbine in the Scottish North Sea - 25 km from the port of Nigg in August 2006. It was the first of two turbines for the Beatrice demonstrator wind farm. (See "REpower Installs Turbine In North Sea.")
