Portland, Ore.-based PPM Energy, a renewable energy developer and subsidiary of the ScottishPower group, has begun construction of the Klondike III Wind Project near Wasco, Ore.

In July 2006, NAW reported that PPM received approval to build up to 272 MW of electricity for this project - it is now expecting to produce a capacity of 221 MW. It will use 44 units of Siemens' 2.3 MW wind turbines and 80 of GE's 1.5 MW turbines to provide this energy, the company says. PPM Energy is in discussions with a number of entities for the sale of energy and renewable energy credits from this project.

Klondike III is located in Sherman County, adjacent to PPM's existing Klondike I and Klondike II wind power plants. Up to 135 jobs - with approximately half of them from the region - will be created during the 10-month construction period, the company adds. The project is expected to purchase about $4 million in local construction materials, such as gravel and concrete, and create approximately $1 million of demand for local services.
