Iberdrola Secures First PPA in U.S. Wind Market

| Iberdrola, an owner and operator of renewable energy projects, has secured a power purchase agreement with PPL EnergyPlus, the energy subsidiary of Allentown, Pa.-headquartered PPL Corp., for Iberdrola's first wind project in the U.S. Through its subsidiary, Community Energy Inc., Iberdrola will own the energy, capacity and renewable attributes from the Locust Ridge Wind Farm in Mahanoy City, Pa., for 20 years once the project achieves commercial operation. The Locust Ridge project is currently under construction and is scheduled to be operating in the first quarter of 2007. The wind farm is expected to have a capability to produce 26 MW of electricity, which is enough electricity to power over 20,000 homes, the companies say. The 13 wind turbines will produce enough renewable energy to offset over 74 million pounds of carbon dioxide - the equivalent of planting over five million trees or removing over 5,000 cars from the road each year. "It's exciting to work with a wind energy leader like PPL," says Brent Alderfer, Community Energy's executive vice president. "Iberdrola's decision to enter the U.S. market in Pennsylvania by acquiring Community Energy and building the Locust Ridge project is an investment that will benefit all Pennsylvanians." Iberdrola plans to further expand its wind energy portfolio by installing 6,200 MW of wind power by 2008 and 10,000 MW by 2011. An effort to achieve these goals has led to international expansion and new offices in Birmingham, U.K.; Rennes and Paris, France; Rome, Italy; Berlin, Germany; Warsaw, Poland; and the U.S., with offices already established in Greece, Portugal, Mexico and Brazil. |
