Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L), a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy, has announced that its Spearville Wind Energy Facility is now fully operational.

The site, located near Spearville, Kan., has 67 turbines that are capable of producing 100.5 MW of electricity (1.5 MW per turbine). According to the company, that is enough renewable energy to serve the annual energy needs of approximately 33,000 homes.

"Putting these wind turbines on the power grid is an important milestone in our comprehensive plan to meet the growing energy needs of the Kansas City area," says Bill Downey, KCP&L's chief executive officer.

KCP&L adds that it is the first regulated electric utility to own and operate a large-scale wind facility in the state.
