Iberdrola has commenced construction work on the 66 MW Pier II wind farm, the company's fourth wind project in Mexico and its first to be designed using supercomputing.

Pier II will be located in the municipality of Esperanza and equipped with 33 Gamesa G97 turbines, each with a unit capacity of 2 MW. Iberdrola says the project will cost about $120 million and help create over 400 local jobs.

Iberdrola explains that it designed the project using a supercomputing system called SEDAR  - a Spanish acronym for “High Resolution Wind Power Simulation” - which was developed along with the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre.

According to Iberdrola, the system helps determine wind turbine locations with the best potential for producing energy by performing an analysis that takes the entire life cycle of the facility into account. The Pier II project will be erected at an altitude of about 2,500 meters, and from now on, the company says it plans to use supercomputing when designing all of its wind farms at locations featuring complex terrain.

Iberdrola will be carrying out this project along with local partner Impulsora Latinoamericana de Energias. The two companies have entered into an agreement to build up to 366 MW together in the years to come.
