Alstom has installed its 6 MW Haliade 150 offshore wind turbine at the Belwind wind farm, located off the Belgian coast.

According to the company, the Haliade is now the world's largest installed offshore wind turbine. The turbine features a 150-meter rotor, and the 61-meter jacket was set atop pillars sunk to a depth exceeding 60 meters. Then the three elements of the 78-meter tower were gradually assembled on the jacket. In all, Alstom says the nacelle towers at a height of over 100 meters above sea level. The overall weight of the turbine and its structure totals 1,500 tons.

The direct-drive Haliade 150 turbine also features Alstom's PURE TORQUE design, which the company says protects the generator by diverting unwanted mechanical stress toward the tower.

Following successful tests performed on the first Haliade 150, commissioned in March 2012 in France, this installation in an important milestone in the industrialization process of the 6 MW turbine and will help confirm how the machine behaves within the offshore environment for which it was designed and developed, Alstom adds.
