GE says Invenergy has ordered three of its "brilliant" 2.5-120 wind turbines as part of an 86-turbine deal for a wind farm in Mills County, Texas.

The 2.5 MW unit, announced in January, harnesses the industrial Internet to analyze data points and help manage wind variability, provide predictable power and communicate with neighboring turbines.

In addition, the 2.5-120 wind turbine incorporates short-term battery storage, which GE says allows operators to utilize energy storage without the extra costs of a farm-level battery storage installation. The design integrates GE’s advanced Durathon Battery technology with three software applications.

“This new marriage of battery storage and advanced software within a wind turbine allows forward-thinking wind energy producers like Invenergy to shift the winds in its favor - increasing wind power’s efficiency and short-term predictability,” says GE’s Keith Longtin.

The 2.5-120 turbines are scheduled to be installed this year at the Goldthwaite Wind Energy facility, currently under construction in central Texas. The project is expected to commence full commercial operation by year-end.
