DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar have announced that the first power has been produced at the London Array Offshore Wind Farm, a 630 MW offshore wind project located in the Thames Estuary that, when completed, will be the world's largest offshore wind farm.

The project began construction in March 2011, and 15 of the 175 turbines have now been installed, with construction scheduled to be finished by the end of the year. The 175 turbines will produce enough power to supply over 470,000 U.K. homes with electricity, according to the companies.

The London Array is being built approximately 20 km off the coasts of Kent and Essex, U.K. The wind farm is being constructed on a 245 km2 site and will be built in two phases. The first phase will cover 90 km2 and include 175 turbines with a combined capacity of 630 MW. If approved, the second phase would bring the total capacity to 870 MW.

DONG Energy owns a 50% stake in the project, E.ON has a 30% stake and Masdar has a 20% stake.
