United Towns and Gores, a community in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, has voted 24-16 in favor of a proposal to build wind projects in the area.

The vote was prompted by the proposal to install meteorological towers to measure wind speeds for the Seneca Mountain Wind project.

"This vote affirms the continued broad support by the vast majority of Vermonters to see the ongoing development of clean energy in our state - for all the many benefits clean energy provides, from mitigating climate change, developing job opportunities up and down the supply chain, to increasing our energy security and independence, while offering local host towns additional revenue streams in tight fiscal times," says Gabrielle Stebbins, executive director of Renewable Energy Vermont.

“It’s truly exciting that by the end of 2012, four Vermont wind farms will provide 120 MW of capacity, supplying enough power for 46,000 homes through contracts with our local utilities,” she adds.
