Vestas Optimizes
3 MW Platform

Vestas has released to the market three new product variants of its 3 MW platform: the V112-3.3 MW, the V117-3.3 MW and the V126-3.3 MW.

According to the company, the new turbines are based on further optimization of the V112-3.0 MW nacelle in combination with a root extended 55 m blade for the V117-3.3 MW and a structural shell blade for the V126-3.3 MW. The drivetrain functionality of the 3 MW platform is built from the same technology as the V112-3.0 MW.

The new 3 MW turbines can be combined with Vestas’ existing services, solutions and options, including its AOM 1000-5000 service packages. Serial delivery for the pilot series of the new 3 MW variants will commence this year.

Vestas notes that it has already sold its 3 MW variants to three projects in Scandinavia totaling approximately 100 MW. One of these projects, the Noerhede Hjortmose wind farm, will be located in the western part of Denmark. Once completed, Vestas says the project will be the largest onshore wind power plant in Denmark. The contract for the Noerhede Hjortmose project also includes a 20-year service deal.

Moventas Tests
Turbine Drivetrain

Moventas says the FusionDrive wind turbine drivetrain has proven to work well during testing at the company’s research and development center in Finland.

Already in commercial production for DeWind, FusionDrive is a joint effort of Moventas and permanent-magnet generator supplier The Switch. Moventas says the product is an advanced gear and generator combination, and it is small and lightweight; a 3 MW FusionDrive weighs 35 tons and is two meters long and 2.3 meters wide.

After a period of successful cold-climate testing, two FusionDrive units are now driven for some five weeks in various load conditions. At full load, the company says, the FusionDrive has shown “ideal” noise and vibration performance.

The FusionDrive load test run will be followed by an analysis phase, serial drive and a disassembly demonstration in an event for customers, media and other interest groups in June.

PPG Receives
GL Certification

Pittsburgh-based PPG Industries says that its fiberglass business has earned Germanischer Lloyd (GL) certification for the HYBON 2002 XM and HYBON 2026 XM fiberglass roving products.

“Our INNOFIBER specialty glass composition fiber – specifically our XM high-modulus composition – offers mechanical properties beyond those of traditional E-Glass,” says Cheryl Richards, PPG global market development manager for energy and infrastructure markets.

“The proprietary sizing chemistry we apply to the high-modulus HYBON XM rovings enables our customers to make higher-performance composites, such as longer wind turbine blades – an emergent trend in the wind energy market,” Richards continues.

GE Prototype
Now Operating

GE has announced that a prototype of its new 2.5-120 wind turbine is operational at a test site in Wieringermeer, Netherlands. The company says the 2.5 MW turbine, announced in January, is designed for low-wind-speed sites and integrates energy storage and advanced forecasting algorithms.

According to GE, the 2.5-120 captures a 25% increase in efficiency and a 15% increase in power output compared to GE’s current model. The turbine has a 120-meter rotor and a maximum hub height of 139 meters.

GE has worked with ECN, a Dutch independent research institute for renewable energy, for the past decade to validate its newest technologies. The 2.5-120 prototype will be tested and validated in accordance with GE and industry standards through this fall

E.ON Selects
geoAMPS Software

geoAMPS has announced that it is providing software to E.ON Climate and Renewables (EC&R) North America to help manage the developer’s many wind energy projects in the U.S. and Canada.

EC&R is using the geoAMPS software product altAMPS to help manage its wind farm projects in 16 states and two provinces of Canada. Operating through a Web database, altAMPS will offer EC&R the ability to manage lease agreements and obligations, a royalty payment calculator, automatic payment tracking, meteorological tower management and workflow generation.

geoAMPS says its software also integrates with EC&R’s financial and supervisory control and data acquisition systems for seamless transfer of data between all systems and to further increase the audit controls and efficiencies within EC&R’s processes.

SgurrEnergy Unveils
Monitoring Product

International renewable energy consultancy SgurrEnergy has launched its own wind-monitoring meteorological mast, SgurrMetMast, for use in wind resource assessments.

SgurrMetMast is available in heights of 70 or 80 meters and can be installed with a range of wind-monitoring instrumentation, including cup and ultrasonic anemometers; temperature, pressure and relative humidity sensors; and wind vanes to provide wind data for wind energy projects.

SgurrEnergy says the new temporary mast, which has a design fatigue life of 30 years, can be deployed on a variety of complex terrain, including arable land, forestry, deforested land, hillside locations and mountains.

SgurrMetMast has been developed with ongoing input from SgurrEnergy’s in-house health and safety consultants and has undergone independent structural assessment in accordance with Eurocode 3.

ematec Introduces
Rotor Blade Lifter

ematec AG, a German manufacturer of special-purpose machines, has announced its RBT Rotor Blade Lifter.

According to ematec, Nordex AG is already utilizing the new technology.

Currently, the ematec RBT Rotor Blade Lifter is being used to help install eight Nordex N117/2400 wind turbines at a wind farm in Zoschingen, Bavaria.

The ematec Rotor Blade Lifter features multi-joint gripper arms and large rubber-coated pressure plates, and the rotor blade can be tilted at an angle of -10 to +95 degrees in order to keep the wind attack surface as small as possible, ematec adds.

The design allows tilting around its longitudinal axis by +/-6 degrees, thus allowing the operator to compensate for an out-of-center attachment without requiring several attaching attempts or balancing out of the rotor blade. Further, the company says, the rotor blade can be transported in a horizontal position at all times.
