Hempel Gets Patent
For Coating System

Hempel, a provider of protective coatings, says its wind turbine coating system – dubbed the Ultra-High Solids and Speed system (UHSS) – has been awarded a patent from the European Patent Office.

The UHSS uses two high-solids coatings to reduce volatile organic compounds emissions, Hempel says, adding that the new coating dries in just 3.5 hours. The UHSS complies with C5-M and C4 categories for corrosive environments and is available globally.

Cvi Releases
Safety Solution

Cv International (Cvi) has released Wind Kit, a portable nitrogen servicing solution designed to address the safety and productivity concerns of wind turbine operations and maintenance workers.

Wind farm technicians, who have had to haul large nitrogen cylinders averaging 140 pounds to the nacelles, have been exposed to both the risk of injury and the potential to damage expensive turbine components. Utilizing long service lines can result in a dilution of the purity and pressure of the nitrogen in traveling up to 300 feet to the turbine, Cvi explains.

New Ultracapacitor
For Pitch Control

Maxwell Technologies Inc. has introduced a 160 V ultracapacitor module designed to provide energy storage and power delivery for wind turbine pitch control, short-term uninterrupted power supply and renewable energy systems.

The module is primarily targeted at pitch-control systems for 1.5 MW to 3 MW wind turbines.

Ultracapacitors provide burst power for electrical blade pitch control systems that are intended to enhance the consistency of wind turbines’ energy output and ensure rotor speed remains within a safe operating range by constantly adjusting turbine blades to compensate for changes in wind velocity.

Ultracapacitors also provide an independent source of backup power for orderly shutdown in the event of a main system power failure and are used to smooth the flow of wind farms’ output to the electric utility grid.

Proto Rolls Out
New Wrench Line

Proto Industrial Tools has introduced a new line of chrome, reversible ratcheting combination wrenches with spline box ends.

The wrenches feature a new open-end configuration that allows up to 13 degrees of additional swing, according to Proto. The offering includes 38 fractional and metric sizes, as well as four wrench sets.

Proto says the new wrench pattern features a patented I-beam design that removes material weight and offers an increased bearing surface to help improve comfort and reduce hand fatigue. The wrenches can be used on spline, four-point, six-point, 12-point and Torx fasteners, the company adds.
