Construction work has commenced on the 129 MW Luchterduinen offshore wind farm, with drilling under way for the project's onshore cabling.

The wind farm, located in the Netherlands, is a joint venture between energy company Eneco and Mitsubishi Corp. The project's 43 Vestas wind turbines will be located 23 km off the coast of Noordwijk and Zandvoort.

The electricity will be transported to the shore by means of a 23 km, 150 kV cable embedded in the sea floor. The onshore section of this cable, which is more than 8 km long, will run from the beach of Noordwijk to a transformer substation held by grid operator TenneT.

Construction of the onshore section will take place in stages through December 2014, and offshore construction is expected to start next summer. The entire project is scheduled to be complete at the end of 2015.
