Turbine manufacturer REpower Systems AG and rotor blade manufacturer Abeking & Rasmussen Rotec (A&R) - both headquartered in Germany - have formed a joint venture for the production of in-house offshore rotor blades developed by REpower for wind energy turbines.

REpower and A&R have stakes of 51% and 49%, respectively, in the new company, which will be called PowerBlades GmbH. Blade production is scheduled to start in mid-year 2008, REpower adds.

"Considering the now-foreseeable positive progress of the offshore wind industry also in Germany, it is necessary to quickly achieve series-production readiness and to further extend our competitive advantage in this important business unit," says Fritz Vahrenholt, CEO of REpower Systems AG.
