Gov. Matt Blunt, R-Mo., has signed legislation to decrease pollution from energy production by encouraging an increase in the use of renewable energy from sources such as wind, hydroelectricity, solar power, hydrogen and biomass. Senate Bill 54, sponsored by state Sen. Chris Koster, R-Mo., creates three incremental renewable energy targets for utilities: 4% by 2012, 8% by 2015 and 11% by 2020.

"This legislation furthers my commitment to Missouri's Green Power Initiative by increasing energy production in our state while practicing responsible environmental stewardship by increasing the use of renewable energy," says Blunt.

At the signing ceremony, the governor also commended Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) for its Comprehensive Energy Plan, which includes renewable sources such a wind power. The company recently added enough wind energy generation to power 33,000 home, according to the governor's office.
