FirstEnergy recently requested the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) approve a green option program for the company's Ohio utility customers, including Ohio Edison, the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. and Toledo Edison. The program would allow the utilities' customers to purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs) in 100 kWh blocks.

"We are pleased to offer a cost-effective way for customers to support alternative energy in our region," says Anthony J. Alexander, FirstEnergy's president and chief executive officer. "If approved, this program also could help begin the process of encouraging future development of alternative energy sources."

Under the proposal, which PUCO and the Office of Ohio Consumers' Counsel helped design, FirstEnergy would purchase up to 150,000 RECs from qualifying resources, the company says. If approved, the program could be in place as early as this summer, FirstEnergy adds.
