Irvine, Calif.-based Edison Mission Group (EMG), a subsidiary of Edison International, has completed construction and started commercial operation of the Wildorado Wind Ranch located in Wildorado, Texas. The project is providing electricity to Southwestern Public Service Co., a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, under a long-term power purchase agreement.

The 161 MW project is the largest wind energy facility in the Texas panhandle region and the largest in EMG's current portfolio of 14 wind projects in five states, the company says. Wildorado will provide enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 48,000 homes.

Wildorado is powered by 70 wind turbines, each of which is capable of generating 2.3 MW of electricity at peak wind speeds. The facility is located on approximately 16,000 acres in Oldham, Potter and Randall counties, about 25 miles west of Amarillo, Texas.

The project was jointly developed by EMG and Cielo Wind Power LP of Austin. Siemens Power Generation was the supplier and erector of the wind turbines, and M.A. Mortenson Co. of Minneapolis was the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the balance of plant work.

EMG currently has a portfolio of more than 600 MW of wind power capacity, either in operation or under construction, at 14 projects in five states, including Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
