The Illinois House of Representatives recently passed an amendment to the Public Utilities Act, House Bill (H.B.) 1871, which would require the state to purchase 2% of its power from renewable energy sources by 2008 and 10% by 2015. The bill, which was passed with a 103-12 vote, would set a goal of 25% renewables by 2025.

"Developing wind power, a 'no-CO2' energy source, can help to solve our global warming problems," says Howard A. Learner, executive director of the Environmental Law & Policy Center. "We commend Rep. Elaine Nekritz, the lead sponsor of H.B.1871, and the bipartisan group of Democrats and Republicans who overwhelmingly supported the renewable energy standard."

The Senate will now vote on the bill.
