Westborough, Mass.-headquartered American Superconductor Corp., an energy technologies company, has received an order for a 4-megaVAR D-VAR system for the 99 MW West Cape Wind Farm on Prince Edward Island. Delivery of the D-VAR system is expected later this year.

West Cape is being developed in two phases by Toronto, Ontario-based Ventus Energy Inc., an independent wind energy company. According to AMSC representatives, construction of 11 Vestas V80 1.8 MW wind turbines began last September and construction of an additional 44 Vestas V80s will begin this summer. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall of 2008.

AMSC's D-VAR solution will be used for phase one of the project and will provide voltage regulation and power factor correction in accordance with the province's grid interconnection requirements.

"This order is a prime example of our D-VAR product's versatility and flexibility," says Chuck Stankiewicz, senior vice president and general manager of AMSC Power Systems. "Our product was selected for the West Cape Wind Farm because it not only helps meet local grid interconnection standards, but also ensures the quality of the zero-emission electricity being supplied to customers."
 
AMSC anticipates the majority of power from the West Cape project will be sold to customers in the New England Power Pool.
