Good Earth Coffeehouse and Bakery of Calgary, Alberta, has purchased 308 MWh of wind power to cover the costs of brewing its coffee. The purchase was made through Calgary-based Pembina Institute's Wind Power Program.

According to the bakery, it calculated all the energy used from coffee brewers, grinders and espresso machines per year, and purchased renewable energy certificates equal to that amount. The purchase was made to celebrate Earth Day; however, the bakery's twelve coffeehouses are involved in an ongoing environmental program. With its most recent effort, the bakery will prevent 123.2 tons of greenhouse gas emissions from being released, the company says.
