The National Energy Board (NEB) has issued a permit to Montana Alberta Tie Ltd. (MATL), a subsidiary of Tonbridge Power Inc., to construct and operate the Canadian portion of an international power line (IPL) between Lethbridge, Alberta, and Great Falls, Mont.

According to NEB, the IPL is the first international line the board has approved and would be the first major interconnection between Alberta and the U.S. It would cover a total distance of 347 km - of which 130 km would be located in Canada.

MATL would be constructing a new 230 kV substation and a phase shifting transformer near Lethbridge, the company says. This substation will control the direction of the flow, allowing power to be transferred in either direction. MATL is proposing to commence construction in September of this year, the company adds.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) recently released its draft environmental impact statement regarding the transmission line. (See "DEQ Seeks Public Comments On Proposed Transmission Line.")
